WHY ARE THEY CALLED PREACHER COOKIES?

It is said that if a housewife looked out her window and saw a preacher coming her way, she could grab the few ingredients she had on hand and quickly whip up these no-bake cookies!

WHAT DO I NEED TO MAKE PREACHER COOKIES?

These are the easy-to-find-in-your-cupboard ingredients you will need:

  • Butter
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Granulated sugar
  • Milk
  • Salt
  • Quick-cooking oats
  • Crunchy peanut butter
  • Vanilla extract
  • Flaky sea salt for finishing

Use unsalted butter for better results. Brown sugar will give your cookies a more caramel-like flavor, but granulated sugar is ok too. If you like creamy peanut butter better, use that one.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST PREACHER COOKIES:

  1. I like to use an ice cream scoop to drop the cookie mixture onto the lined baking sheet. This helps make each cookie the same size and keeps your fingers clean!
  2. Feel free to substitute any non-dairy milk or nut-free butter in this recipe to fit your taste preferences and/or dietary needs.
  3. A little sprinkle of flaky sea salt at the end helps to really bring out the chocolate flavor in these cookies and helps to balance out some of the sweetness, as it does in World Peace Cookies and Ritz Cracker Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies.

HOW TO STORE PREACHER COOKIES?

These cookies can be stored in a sealed airtight container or plastic storage bag on the counter for up to 4-days. They can also be stored in the fridge. See above for information on freezing preacher cookies.

Answering Your Burning Questions:

CAN YOU FREEZE PREACHER COOKIES?

Yes, you can! Allow the cookies to cool completely then place them in a sealed plastic freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Allow the cookies to thaw prior to serving.

CAN I USE OLD-FASHIONED OATS INSTEAD OF QUICK OATS?

Old-fashioned oats will work fine in this recipe. The flakes of old-fashioned oats are larger than quick oats and they will provide more texture, but the flavor will be the same.

WHY DO MY NO-BAKE COOKIES TURN OUT GOOEY?

The main reason this happens is that the mixture is not boiled for long enough or is not brought up to a high enough temperature on the stove.

Make sure that your mixture comes to a complete boil, then start a timer for 1 full minute.

Although these cookies are no-bake, this cooking step is important.
