If you haven’t made yeasted bread, no worries. I guide you through the process of how to make cinnamon breadsticks

When I began crafting my cinnamon breadsticks, I aimed to achieve a soft, tender texture, which led me to incorporate yeast for that perfect doughy consistency. After baking the breadsticks and generously sprinkling them with cinnamon sugar and butter, my husband and I eagerly conducted a taste test.

The outcome was a pleasantly soft dough; however, it was slightly lacking in flavor and depth.

Then, I had a stroke of inspiration to elevate it to the level of cinnamon rolls by adding a delectable and creamy icing. That’s when I introduced a luscious cream cheese and sugar topping.

This sweet icing is the key to crafting an exceptional dessert breadstick.

What are Cinnamon Breadsticks

Cinnamon breadsticks are heavenly sticks of soft, yeasty dough sprinkled generously with cinnamon sugar and baked to golden perfection. They’re like mini cinnamon rolls’ cousins, perfect for dunking into your morning coffee or enjoying as an afternoon treat. And don’t forget the creamy icing on top for that extra touch of sweetness!

It seems like Domino’s has a hit with their cinnamon breadsticks, but I’ve never tasted them. That’s why I decided to create my own take on them, leaning more towards the flavors of a classic cinnamon roll.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Dry Yeast: Activates and helps the dough rise.
  • Warm Water: Creates the ideal environment for yeast activation.
  • Sugar: Provides sweetness and aids in yeast fermentation.
  • Olive Oil: Adds moisture and richness to the dough.
  • Salt: Enhances flavor and regulates yeast activity.
  • Flour: Forms the base structure of the breadsticks.
  • Butter: Adds richness and flavor to the dough and the cinnamon sugar topping.
  • Cinnamon: Infuses the breadsticks with a warm, aromatic flavor.
  • Cream Cheese: Creates a creamy and tangy icing base.
  • Powdered Sugar: Sweetens and thickens the icing.
  • Butter: Adds richness and depth of flavor to the icing.
  • Vanilla Extract: Enhances the overall sweetness and aroma of the icing.

How to Make Cinnamon Sugar Breadsticks

Step 1 – Prepare the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water (110°-115°). Add 1 teaspoon of sugar. Let it stand for at least 5 minutes until it becomes foamy. The sugar feeds the yeast and helps aid the proofing process.

Add sugar, olive oil, salt, and 2 cups of flour to the yeast mixture. Beat until smooth.

Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough.

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead until smooth and elastic, about 6-8 minutes.

Step 2 – First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top.

Cover and let it rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 hour.

Step 3 – Shape the Breadsticks

Punch down the dough and turn it onto a lightly floured surface.

Divide the dough into 16 equal portions.

Roll each portion into a 6-inch rope and twist around a metal shish kabob skewer. Place the skewer on top of a small baking sheet, ensuring the ends sit on the ridge of the tray.

Step 4 – Second Rise

Let rise until doubled, about 30 minutes.

Step 5 – Bake

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

Bake the breadsticks for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Once the skewers and breadsticks are cool to touch, carefully remove the skewer.

Step 6 – Cinnamon Sugar Coating

In a shallow bowl, combine the sugar and cinnamon.

Brush the warm breadsticks with melted butter, then roll them in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until coated evenly.

Step 7 – Make Cream Cheese Icing

In a medium-sized bowl, using either a handheld or stand mixer equipped with a paddle or whisk attachment, whip the cream cheese at high speed until it achieves a smooth and creamy consistency.

Toss in the butter and mix it well until it’s smooth and blended. Then, gradually add the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla, making sure everything gets nicely combined.

Dip one side of the breadsticks into the icing. Serve the warm breadsticks immediately.

To reheat later, it is best to place in the oven or toaster oven for a couple of minutes at 350 degrees. Make sure not to overcook.
