It’s like a triple-decker BLT sandwich, with three bread slices, crispy bacon, lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise, and the addition of juicy cooked chicken or turkey. They originated in social clubs in New York, where they earned the name.
What Makes This Club Sandwich So Good
- A quick, anytime meal. Prep and assemble this sandwich in just a few minutes. It’s especially quick if you have leftover cooked chicken and bacon ready to go, and it makes a tasty lunch or light dinner.
- It’s all in the layering. My favorite way to layer a chicken club sandwich is with fresh romaine lettuce in both sections. Trust me, it makes a difference!
- Classic. I make this easy chicken club whenever I change things up from my usual classic egg salad or chicken salad sandwiches. It’s always a crowd-pleaser.
- Use what you have on hand. Swap the chicken for leftover cooked turkey, use your favorite sandwich spread, substitute bacon for deli ham, etc. A club sandwich is totally customizable, and even if it’s not traditional, you decide what goes in it. So, use the ingredients you have in the fridge.

Ingredients In a Chicken Club Sandwich
A chicken club is a bit like a deconstructed version of my BLT chicken salad. Each ingredient makes up a delicious layer, and I’ve covered the key ones in this club sandwich below. You’ll find the printable list with the full recipe amounts in the recipe card after the post.
- Bread Slices – Any bread you’d like, lightly toasted. You can use white or brown bread, whole wheat, sourdough slices, etc.
- Mayonnaise – My favorite is Hellmann’s. You can also use homemade mayo, garlicky aioli, or another sandwich spread you prefer. Feel free to add condiments like Dijon mustard if you’d like.
- Lettuce and Tomato – I recommend crisp romaine lettuce and a large tomato, like Beefsteak tomatoes or similar.
- Cooked Chicken – You can use sliced deli chicken or any leftover cooked chicken you have on hand, like rotisserie chicken or air fryer chicken breast.
- Bacon – Cooked to your desired crispiness using the air fryer or your preferred method. You could also use deli ham, prosciutto, or other cured meats.
How to Make The Best Club Sandwich
Whether you’re making a chicken club or turkey club, a classic club sandwich follows a certain “formula”. BUT, not all sandwiches are created equal!
Hear me out: The best club sandwich has crisp lettuce as the first and last layers. This way, there’s greens on both “decks” and the mayo on the bread keeps the lettuce from sliding out of the sandwich. Here’s how I prepare the perfect club sandwich following this method:


- Toast the bread slices, and spread mayo over each slice.
- First bread slice, topped with lettuce, tomato, and cooked chicken.


- Second bread slice, topped with bacon and more lettuce.
- The third bread slice, to close the sandwich.
Above and beyond that, you can add ingredients like sliced avocado, cheese, and onions. If you have one, use a long toothpick to secure the layers together after you’ve assembled the sandwich. Slice your club sandwich into triangles or in half, and enjoy!

Tips and Variations
- Skip the middle slice. Simplify this recipe and use two slices of bread instead of three, for a more traditional sandwich.
- Add an egg. Make this club sandwich recipe with a fried egg or sliced hard-boiled egg for a fun breakfast sandwich variation.
- Make a chicken Caesar club sandwich. Try a chicken Caesar salad-inspired version! Replace mayo with creamy Caesar salad dressing (you can toss the romaine lettuce in the dressing, too), and add shaved or grated Parmesan.
- Change up the spread. Make this sandwich with different spreads and dressings. Add pesto, or try Thousand Island dressing or ranch dressing.
- Make a wrap. Take your chicken sandwich to go in a chicken club wrap instead.

How to Store Leftovers
If you make your sandwich ahead, or if you simply want to keep leftovers fresh, store this chicken club sandwich in an airtight container in the fridge. It’ll last for up to 2 days (after that, the bread starts to get a bit stale and soggy).
More Chicken Sandwich Recipes
Lightly toast slices of bread.
3 slices bread
Spread a thin layer of mayo over each slice of toasted bread.
2 Tablespoons mayo
Place half of the lettuce and the slices of tomato on top of one slice of the bread. Then top the cooked chicken. Top that with a piece of toasted bread with the mayo side facing down.
2-3 slices tomato, 2 leaves romaine lettuce, 4 ounces cooked chicken
Arrange the slices of bacon along with a little remaining lettuce. Top with the final slice of toasted bread, mayo side down.

If you have a long toothpick, it is best to press it through the sandwich to help the layers stay together. Cut into triangles or just cut in half and serve.
- Bread: White bread, wheat, sourdough, etc.
- Chicken: Deli chicken, rotisserie chicken, leftover chicken, air fryer chicken breasts, etc.
- You can omit the middle bread slice and use only 2 slices if you prefer.
- Swap mayo with aioli or your favorite sandwich spread.
- Avocado, cheese, and onions are great additions.
